COVID-19 Safety in the Workplace

There are some simple preventative measures that can be taken to ensure the health and safety of all staff, and help prevent the spread of COVID-19 or other germs and viruses in the workplace.

These measures include:

  • Washing hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, including before entering and after leaving any common areas. Download our Control the Spread of Germs and Viruses poster to educate staff on how to wash their hands properly.

  • When hand washing facilities are unavailable, use an alcohol based hand sanitiser.

  • Clean work stations at least once daily with disinfectant wipes to ensure a clean working environment. Experts estimate that coronavirus can survive up to 72 hours on hard surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel. To maintain proper hygiene, regularly clean surfaces, more so those that are frequently touched, with sanitisers or soap and water, including surfaces such as keyboards, phones, PDA’s and keypads. • Practice social distancing by avoiding close contact with others, particularly anyone displaying flu like symptoms. This includes no handshakes or any other form of personal contact.

  • Ensure a distance of 1.5 metres is present between you and your nearest colleague, stagger lunch breaks and minimise cross department contact.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or with your elbow when coughing or sneezing, then immediately discard the tissue and clean your hands and work station.

  • Provide personal protective equipment where required. Dependant on your industry, you are required to make all reasonable efforts to provide employees with personal protective gear such as hand gloves or safety glasses. • Keep up to date with the advice and information provided by the Australian Government Department of Health and the World Health Organisation.
