Protect Your Skin from the Sun

ATOMiser protect your skin from the sun

Why is it important to protect your skin from the sun?

You may be surprised to learn that the skin is the largest organ in the human body. Not only functioning to provide a barrier between sensitive tissue and external irritants, the skin contains nerve endings which relay information about our surroundings (such as temperatures, textures and pain) to the brain. Therefore, it is imperative to our overall wellbeing that we look after our skin.

We’re all aware of the sun on a warm, sunny day, but even during cooler weather the sun can have a damaging effect on the skin. Exposure to harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays for even only a few minutes can cause painful sunburn and even cause the growth of life-threatening melanomas. In fact, skin cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Australia. To avoid the harmful rays emitted from the sun contacting your skin, covering skin with clothing is the best practice. In instances where it is not possible to cover areas of skin with clothing, protection using a broad-spectrum sunscreen is advised.

Light rays penetrating skin vs sunscreen protecting skin

How does sunscreen work?

Sunscreen provides an invisible barrier between the sun and your skin, reflecting light away from the skin. When applied correctly, protection is provided for at least two hours. Individual sunscreens differ in sun protection factor (SPF). When choosing sunscreen, look for a product that is SPF30 or higher as a lower level SPF will not provide adequate protection from the sun.

Sunscreen Terms Explained

Broad-spectrum means that sunscreen offers protection from UVA rays, as well as UVB. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of protection sunscreen gives against UVB radiation.

  • SPF30 filters 96.7% of UVB

  • SPF50 filters 98% of UVB

Both provide excellent protection when applied properly. Always check the use by date on packaging and store sunscreen below 30°C.

For the best protection a sunscreen like PROBLOC SPF50+ is recommended. This broad-spectrum formula has ultra-high protection, is nanoparticle-free, approved to AS/NZS 2604:2012, water resistant for up to 4 hours and non-greasy, making it built to withstand any industrial environment. There are also SPF50+ lip balms available with added vitamin E for extra nourishment and protection.
