The sun emits red, orange, yellow, green, blue and countless other shades of visible light. This colour is determined by the light’s energy and wavelength. The more energy, the shorter the wave length. It may surprise you, but the light that contains the most energy is blue light, also known as high-energy visible light (HEV). Blue light wavelengths are just long enough that they can been seen with the human eye, unlike higher energy, shorter wavelength, ultraviolet light.
The Earth’s main source of blue light is the sun, but blue light is also be emitted from electronic devices such as computers, tablets and mobile phones. In total, blue light accounts for approximately one third of all visible light.
Blue light is a necessary part of life. Its existence is linked to setting cardiac rhythms, enhancing mood and attention. All of this necessary blue light is emitted from the sun, during 'awake' hours. Blue light emitted from electronic devices, especially when used after sunset, can 'trick' the brain and reduce the secretion of melatonin, the bodies sleep hormone. This leads to reduced sleep time, which has adverse effects on the body.
Recent studies have also suggested that extended exposure to blue light, predominantly from electronic devices, contributes to digital eye strain and may increase the risk of macular degeneration. This is because the cornea can not block or reflect this blue light, but exactly how it is harming our eyes is still a mystery.
View blue light safely and combat digital eye strain by reducing screen time where possible, using blue light filter screen or wearing blue light blocking or filtering glasses.
