Sunscreen Explained

Skin Protection

The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Its protective function keeps inner, more sensitive tissue safe from external irritants. It is also covered in nerve endings relaying information to the brain about its surroundings, including temperatures, textures and pain. Looking after your skin is imperative for overall wellbeing.

Protecting Skin from the Sun: Sunscreen

The sun sits unassumingly in the sky every day, but even in cooler weather the sun can have damaging effects on the skin; emitting both harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Within only a few minutes of exposure these rays can cause painful sunburn and can lead to life threatening melanomas. Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. Best practice is to cover skin with clothing, but this is not always possible. Skin must always be protected with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Sunscreen creates an invisible barrier between skin and the sun, reflecting light away from the skin. When applied correctly it provides protection for at least two hours. Each individual sunscreen has its own sun protection factor (SPF). Always pick a sunscreen that is SPF30 or higher; a sunscreen with a lesser SPF will not provide adequate protection from the sun. For the best protection ATOMise recommend PROBLOC SPF50+ sunscreen. Not only is this formula broad-spectrum, but it is also ultra-high protection, four hours water resistant and non-greasy; making it built to withstand any industrial environment. PROBLOC also have a range of SPF50+ lip balms with added vitamin E for extra protection and nourishment.

TIP: Always check sunscreen expiry date before use, the effects of the sunscreen will be lessened if it is expired.

Sunscreen Terms Explained

Broad-spectrum means that sunscreen offers protection from UVA rays, as well as UVB. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of protection sunscreen gives against UVB radiation.

  • SPF30 filters 96.7% of UVB

  • SPF50 filters 98% of UVB

Both provide excellent protection when applied properly. Always check the use by date on packaging and store sunscreen below 30°C
