The 101 on Ratchet Tie Down Straps

Ratchet straps are a great tool to tie down and secure moving cargo. To prevent failure of the strap and to ensure that your cargo is safe and secure during transport, it is important to inspect the tool each time before using.
Ratchet straps that are regularly used in outdoor conditions should be routinely scrutinised for their condition and replaced every 2-4 years, whether or not extensive damage is visible. Even minor damage can significantly impact on the strap’s ability to hold objects securely.
When conducting an inspection, look for signs of deterioration such as:
- Ratchet strap shortening of length
- Colour fading or webbing
- Any abrasions, holes, cuts or tears
- Stiffening of the web
- Uneven surface of the yarn
- Any knots in the webbing
- Corrosion of buckles and fittings
- Broken or worn stitches

To keep a ratchet strap in good working order, limit contact with abrasive surfaces, do not twist, kink or tie knots in the strap, keep straps away from acid, splinters, weld splatters, and flames, and if possible store in a cool, dark and dry place.
Saturn offers a number of different length and capacity ratchet tie-down assemblies with double stitched, 100% polyester webbing.
