Check the numbers on the EN 388 Standards shield to ensure your hand protection meets your requirements. Each number represents a different test, the higher the number the greater the protection.


A circular piece of material is cut from the palm of the glove for each of these tests.


The material is subject to a spinning, horizontal piece of “sand paper”. It measures the cycles under a pre-determined pressure before the fabric is breeched.


A circular cutting wheel (similar to a pizza cutter) is motioned in a pendulum fashion under a pre-determined pressure and measures the cycles before the fabric is breeched.


A small incision is made in the material and clamps placed on either side of the cut, which are then pulled in opposite directions to determine the pressure required to tear the glove.


The material is placed on a die, and a blunt stylus (as sharp as a ball point pen) is pressed onto the fabric. The rating is a representation of the pressure it takes to displace 1cm3 of fabric.

Effectively this test measures the “stretch” of the glove. It is the only rating where a lower value is preferable, as the “stretch” of the glove helps to determine the dexterity and feel of the glove. More stretch means greater dexterity.

Many glove liners (un-coated) or cut resistant sleeves carry an “X” for puncture because the stylus pushes through the fabric before the 1cm3 material is displaced, and therefore puncture resistance cannot be measured.
